The wedding guest outfit guide
Every dress code, every season - plus the rules that never change.
Wedding guest dressing is a puzzle: honor the code, match the venue, dress for the season, don't upstage anyone. Here's the playbook that keeps you on the right side of all of that.
The dress codes, translated
- Black tie - Floor-length gown or a dressy midi in luxe fabric. Statement jewelry. Heel or dressy flat.
- Black tie optional / formal - Long or midi dress in a rich fabric, tailored jumpsuit, or a formal midi skirt + top set.
- Cocktail - Knee-length or midi dress. Silk, satin, jacquard, lace - festive fabric matters more than sparkle.
- Semi-formal - Midi dress or a tailored set. Slightly less shiny than cocktail; still dressed up.
- Dressy casual / garden - Midi dress in florals, linen, or lightweight fabrics. Block heel, wedge, or a dressy flat.
Season by season
- Spring wedding - Pastels, florals, soft midi silhouettes. Bring a light knit or shawl for evening.
- Summer wedding - Linen, cotton, silk. Bold color reads modern; florals are perennial. Avoid heavy fabrics.
- Autumn wedding - Deep jewel tones (burgundy, forest, plum), velvet, wool blends. Boots if the venue is rustic.
- Winter wedding - Long sleeves, richer fabrics (satin, velvet), darker palette. Sparkle reads seasonal, not costume.
By venue
- Church + reception venue - Cover shoulders during ceremony (a shawl or bolero). Dress code usually formal or semi-formal.
- Beach or garden - Flowing midi dresses, block heels or wedges that survive grass and sand.
- Barn or vineyard - Fabric-forward midis, ankle boots or block heels; skip anything precious that touches the ground.
- Ballroom / hotel - The dressiest end. Long dresses, gowns, real jewelry.
- City hall / small wedding - A great suit or tailored dress reads perfectly.
The universal rules
- Don't wear white - Not ivory, not cream, not champagne - unless the couple explicitly asks.
- Don't wear all-black to a daytime summer wedding - Unless the dress code says formal.
- Never outshine the couple - Skip full sequin gowns unless it's the requested vibe.
- Match the formality of the venue - A ballgown at a barn wedding reads costume. A slip dress in a cathedral reads underdressed.
Frequently asked
- Can I wear a jumpsuit to a wedding?
- Yes, if it's tailored and in a formal fabric. A wide-leg silk or satin jumpsuit reads cocktail perfectly.
- Is it okay to repeat a wedding guest outfit?
- Yes. Change the shoe, bag, jewelry, or add a shawl - most guests won't notice, and the ones who do won't care.
- Can I wear pants to a black tie wedding?
- Yes - a tailored tuxedo or wide-leg silk pants with a formal top absolutely works.
