What is business casual?

The vague dress code, resolved - with real outfits for real offices.

Business casual is the middle rung of a three-step ladder - smart casual below, business professional above. The point is 'polished but not suited.' You look like you take the job seriously without looking like you're going to court.

The specifics vary by industry and city, but the framework is universal: a considered top, structured or tailored bottom, real shoes, minimal but intentional accessories.

What's in

  • Tops - Knit polos, silk or cotton blouses, fine-gauge sweaters, tailored shirts (tucked or half-tucked), a good t-shirt under a blazer.
  • Bottoms - Wool trousers, chinos, dark straight-leg denim (in most offices), tailored skirts and dresses to the knee.
  • Outerwear - Blazers, unstructured jackets, cardigans in solid colors and quality fabric.
  • Shoes - Loafers, low block heels, ankle boots, clean leather sneakers (in creative offices), pointed flats.
  • Accessories - A structured leather bag, a watch, small jewelry - one focal piece maximum.

What's out

What's out is usually more useful than what's in:

  • Ripped or distressed denim - Even dark. It reads too casual for most business-casual offices.
  • Athleisure - Leggings, joggers, hoodies, running sneakers. Save for the walk home.
  • Overly casual tees - Logo tees, graphic tees, oversized tees - swap for a plain tee under a blazer.
  • Flip-flops and slides - Any open, unstructured shoe reads as beachwear at a desk.

Business casual vs. smart casual vs. business professional

Smart casual is one step down: dark denim, a knit or shirt, clean sneakers or loafers. You can wear it to a decent restaurant.

Business casual is what most modern offices ask for: no tie, no full suit required, but a jacket, real trousers, and grown-up shoes.

Business professional is a full suit, dress shirt, tie for men or a tailored dress/skirt suit - the client-meeting, court, or finance-floor standard.

Real outfits

  • Corporate office - Wool trousers, tucked silk blouse, low block-heel loafer, structured tote.
  • Creative/tech office - Straight dark denim, fine knit, blazer, clean white leather sneaker or loafer.
  • Client-facing day - Tailored dress in a solid neutral, low pump or ballet flat, small structured bag.
  • Warmer months - Linen trousers, cotton shirt or knit polo, loafer or leather slide sandal (in less strict offices).
